New poll shows Californians aren't happy with their government, state and national leaders (2024)

WELL, THIS LATEST PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE OF CALIFORNIA POLL REALLY JUST GETS A TEMPERATURE CHECK ON WHERE CALIFORNIANS STAND ON THEIR ELECTED LEADERS AND THEIR STATE GOVERNMENT. SO HERE’S WHAT THE POLL SHOWED. FIRST, STARTING WITH GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM, HIS APPROVAL RATING AMONG ALL ADULTS IS AT 44%. THE LEGISLATURE THAT NUMBER IS AT 40%. THE TOP ISSUES MENTIONED WHEN ASKED ABOUT CALIFORNIA, THE COST OF LIVING, THE ECONOMY AND INFLATION DOMINATED. IT WAS FOLLOWED BY HOUSING COSTS AND AFFORDABILITY. THEN HOMELESSNESS, CRIME AND DRUGS, AND THEN JUST GOVERNMENT IN GENERAL. 6 IN 10 CALIFORNIANS SAY THE STATE IS GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION, WHICH IS A LARGER SHARE OF PEOPLE SAYING THIS IN MORE THAN A DECADE. OVERALL, WE FIND THE APPROVAL OF GOVERNOR OF GOVERNOR NEWSOM AND PRESIDENT BIDEN ARE BOTH AT RECORD LOWS. WE FIND THAT THE LEGISLATURE OVERALL IS AT A FIVE YEAR LOW. THAT CONGRESS IS AT A TEN YEAR LOW, WHILE HOUSE, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES VIEWS OF THOSE IN THEIR OWN HOUSE REPRESENTATIVES ARE AT AN ALL TIME LOW. NOW, ACCORDING TO THIS POLL, THE PERSPECTIVES ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ARE WORSE. THE APPROVAL RATING FOR PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AMONG ALL ADULTS IS AT 42%. Gavin Newsom's approval rating among likely voters at 44%. The number for the state legislature is even lower, with a 40% approval rating. Six in 10 voters said they felt the state was going in the wrong direction.Forty-seven percent of the poll's respondents said they were Democrats, 24% Republican, 26% said they were independent or declined to state, while 3% said a different party. At the federal level, the approval rating among California adults for President Joe Biden sits at 42%. For Congress, the figure is 19%. The poll showed 75% of respondents said the country is going in the wrong direction. "Overall, we find that approval of Gov. Newsom and President Biden are both at record lows," said Dean Bonner with the Public Policy Institute of California. "We find that the legislature is at a five-year low, Congress is at a 10-year low while views of those in their House of Representatives are at an all-time low."
