How to replace tub-to-pump hose W10802689 on a Whirlpool / KitchenAid / Maytag washer (1)

The tub-to-pump hose in your Maytag, Whirlpool or KitchenAid washing machine connects the bottom outlet of the outer tub to the inlet of the drain pump. When you start a wash cycle, the pump activates to drain water from the tub. The water flows through the tub-to-pump hose into the drain pump, where it’s pumped out and drained.

Over time, the tub-to-pump hose can become damaged, which often happens in the form of cracking. If the hose leaks or bursts, you’ll often know it when you see water coming out from under the washing machine. Catching a failing tub to pump hose early and replacing it ASAP can help you prevent major leaks that can damage your home and washer.

If this has happened to you, you’ll be glad to know that replacing the hose is an easy DIY fix that doesn’t require any special tools.

You can find a replacement tub-to-pump hose here. If you need other replacement parts for your washer, just enter your model number at AppliancePartsPros.com to find them. It’s that easy! What causes a tub-to-pump hose to fail?

Any puddling water under the washer is an early sign of hose wear. Here are some of the most common causes of hose leaks or ruptures:

  • Normal wear and tear – These rubber hoses deteriorate naturally over time, which can cause them to crack or dry rot.
  • Mineral buildup – If you live in an area with hard water, mineral deposits can cause the hose to stiffen and eventually crack.
  • Improper installation – If the hose is kinked or strained during installation, it weakens the rubber and makes it more likely to fail.
  • Impact damage – If something hits or falls on the hose, it can split and leak.

Pro tip: Always turn the water supply to your washer OFF before leaving your home for an extended time, such as when you’re on vacation or when no one is home to catch a leak from your washer. Washing machine problems are the leading cause of water damage in homes, as the machine can flood an entire house in just a few hours.

What you need

  • Replacement tub-to-pump hose (make sure it’s compatible with your specific washer model before installing)
  • Pliers
  • Wooden block

Important: The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it. Always consult the user manual or refer to any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for the recommended tools for your appliance model.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the tub-to-pump hose

Follow these steps to swap out a faulty tub-to-pump hose.

  1. Unplug the washer from the power outlet and turn off the water supply line.
  2. Move the washer out from against the wall so you can work on it easier.
  3. Place a towel under the front edge of the washer to catch any water.
  4. Place a sturdy wooden block in front of the washer, then tilt the washer forward until it’s stable against the block.
  5. Remove the installation pad at the bottom of the washer by bending it up at the edges and pulling it out.
  6. Find the tub-to-pump hose at the bottom of the washer. It connects the top outlet port to the drain pump and will have hose clamps on both ends.
  7. Use a pair of pliers to squeeze the tabs on the upper hose clamp together. Slide the clamp up the hose away from the connection point.
  8. Pull the old tub-to-pump hose off the outlet port. You may need to wiggle it side to side if it’s stuck.
  9. Slide the upper and lower hose clamps off the old hose and onto the new replacement hose.
  10. Insert the new hose end-up into the outlet port connection.
  11. Slide the hose clamps back into position and bend them slightly to hold the hose in place.
  12. Replace the installation pad at the bottom by inserting the corners in and bending it back into position.
  13. Carefully return the washer to the upright position.
  14. Plug the washer back in and turn the water supply back on.
  15. Slide the washer back up against the wall. Go slowly and avoid crushing the hoses and cords.
  16. Run a test cycle to check for any leaks from the washer.
